A-G: Mthethwa not to blame for wall, Merc

2012-07-14 00:00

THE wall around Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s house was built using secret service funds, but the minister was not to blame because there was no evidence he knew where the money came from.

This, in essence was the finding of the Auditor-General’s (A-G) office after being asked by Mthethwa to look into the matter that was exposed in the media.

There was also an allegation that the police chief drove around in a Mercedes Benz SUV bought from the same secret fund.

In a statement yesterday the A-G said the following conclusions were drawn:

• No evidence could be provided to indicate that the minister was involved in giving the instruction to conduct a risk assessment on his private property or was involved during the risk assessment process.

• There was no evidence that indicated the minister knew that the wall was being erected using secret services funds.

• There was no evidence that linked the minister to the contravention of the policy and procedures related to the secret services fund.

• No documentation or information was provided to link the Mercedes SUV to the minister.

Statements taken from the protectors of the minister indicated that they had no recollection of driving the Mercedes-Benz SUV to transport the minister.

On the issue of Mthethwa not being aware of the activities of the Crime Intelligence Unit, the A-G’s office recommended that the monitoring and accountability practices between the department and the minister be strengthened. This was so that timely action could taken in instances of non-compliance.
