A World Cup hit with SA's Indians at its heart

2010-07-01 00:00

“WE like the vade, we like the goolgoola, we like the vermicelli, we like the soji, the porridge and the roti.” These are the chorus lyrics of Lotus FM hit song Goolgoola Jive.

The song, written by Merebank artist Dr Satchu Annamalai, is a contender in the station’s contest to find their listeners’ favourite World Cup- related song.

Even though the lyrics are not World Cup-based, listeners have overwhelmingly voted for Goolgoola Jive and the song has already received more airplay than the official song of the Fifa World Cup, Waka Waka, and the popular Wavin’ Flag.

The song is on Annamalai’s debut album Chubhang, which he describes as a developing genre that incorporates the popular chutney and bhangra music. “The song is part of my contribution to the 2010 World Cup and the 150 years that Indians have been in South Africa. Goolgoola Jive has been penned with the simplest of lyrics and has been the firm favourite with avid Lotus FM listeners from the first day it was played,” he said.

The goolgoola is a savoury delicacy made during prayers and festivals, and Annamalai says he wants the song to capture the essence of the traditional South African Indian.

Annamalai plans to take his album on a roadshow across the country at the end of July.
