A day to forget for KwaZulu-Natal cricket teams

2010-02-12 00:00

AFTER winning the toss, KZN Inland were bundled out for 136 on day one of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge against South Western Districts in Oudtshoorn yesterday.

Inland opening bowler Richard Hlela’s brace saw SWD 113 runs behind with eight wickets in hand at the close. Earlier, SWD leg-spinner Stephan Grobler ran through the Inland lower order after opening bowler Wessel Hartslief had done much of the initial damage.

There was drama when Maritzburg Varsity’s Zimbabwe-born Prosper Tsvanhu had to withdraw during the day at the Recreation Ground.

Apparently only SA citizens or SA residents are allowed to play in this competition. This has always been a grey area. Previously, non-SA citizens were apparently eligible to play as one of the six “white” players allowed in each provincial side.

Inland were not informed of this rule change, union president Yunus Bhamjee told The Witness. Tsvanhu was replaced by first-class debutant Brady Barends.

Meanwhile, after day one in Potchefstroom, KZN Coastal are 365 runs behind a rampant North West with nine wickets intact.

Admittedly the Senwes Park pitch is notoriously batsman-friendly, but Coastal are in trouble with NW having amassed a massive 400-plus in the allotted 85 overs.

Andrea Agathagelou (158) led the assault with support from Muhammad Akoojee and Chris Jonker. NW’s lowest score was Cliffie Deacon’s 22.
