A deliciously funny cabaret treat

2012-01-24 00:00

MIDLANDS theatre stars Paul Spence and Cat Simoni will be performing the musical cabaret, Noel & Gertie, In Love Again, at the Schlesinger Theatre at Michaelhouse in Balgowan at 7 pm on February 3.

Written by Spence, who lives in Nottingham Road’s Gowrie Village, which is also home to Simoni, the show is set in a cocktail bar in Jamaica in the sixties.

A rather bored Noel Coward, “master” of English comedy, is unexpectedly reunited with his former co-star: the incomparable, gorgeous Gertrude Lawrence.

In their brief, deliciously funny encounter that follows, Coward and his blithe spirit and divine muse, the mischievous Lawrence, relive their greatest stage successes, reminisce about their glory days — and sing the songs that made them the toast of the West End, Broadway and the entire theatre world.

The audience can look forward to unforgettable songs like A Room With A View, Mad About The Boy, I’ll See You Again, Some Day I’ll Find You, The Stately Homes of England, Don’t Let’s Be Beastly To The Germans, and London Pride — as well as the wickedly funny honeymoon scene from Coward’s smash hit, Private Lives.

Simoni is a performer par excellence. With complete mastery of voice and song and equally at home in the pop, rock and stage-musical environments, she delivers chart-toppers and powerful show-stoppers with consummate ease. Her extraordinary talent can transform well-worn numbers into new minted gold.

Born in Durban, she has performed in some of London’s top venues for over a decade, including The Ritz, The Dorchester, The Park Lane Intercontinental and Berkeley Square Casino, and most recently, in The Girl From Somewhere, produced by Alan Sutherland.

Spence was also born in Durban, and studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1983, he spent seven years as a member of the company in Stratford-upon-Avon, London, and on tour. Since 1990, he has worked as both actor and director in theatres in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and abroad; from Belfast to Copenhagen, Vienna to Tokyo.

Tickets for Noel & Gertie, In Love Again, are R80 (R60 pupils and pensioners). To book your seat, phone 033 234 1314 or e-mail theatre@michaelhouse. org Looking ahead, the venue will also be playing host guitarists Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery, on February 24. The senior boys will be putting on the production Waiting for Godot from February 13 to February 15, and the wonderful A Handful of Keys will be staged from April 19 to April 21.
