A great year of golfing to look forward to in 2013

2013-01-04 00:00

HAPPY New Year to everyone and let us hope that 2013 brings continued enjoyment to all of us who play the wonderful game of golf.

You may have made a New Year’s resolution and you are looking forward to implementing it.

A resolution could be to visit the range more often. Perhaps you are unhappy with your game and as a result your handicap increased during the past year. It’s no use complaining about how badly you are playing if you never practise.

You may want to play more golf this year. Playing golf is an automatic switch-off to things that may be bothering you. There is no doubt about it, once you have hit your first tee shot, it’s difficult to think of the trouble and turmoil in the world.

Whatever your intentions are, it’s important to remember to relax and enjoy playing the game more; it often brings more consistent scores.

Apart from playing golf, a new year brings the usual four Major tournaments to watch as well as the President’s Cup in October. This year the Americans have home advantage at Muirfield Village course in Dublin, Ohio. All the tournaments will be live on television.

We always look forward to each Major trophy, but it has an extra bit of spice when one of our South African golfers are in contention.

We have had three South African winners of major tournaments in the last three years: Louis Oosthuizen (2010), Charl Schwartzel (2011) and Ernie Els (2012). Will we have a fourth?

The first Major of the year is always the U.S. Masters at the same venue, and this year it is due to be played in early April. Then we have the U.S. Open, which is in June and this will be played at the famous Merion course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

The last time it was played there in 1981, David Graham won his only U.S. Open. The British Open in July will be played at Muirfield in Scotland. Then finally, in August the U.S. PGA (Wannamaker Trophy) will be played in New York at the Oak Hill Golf Club.

We have a great golfing calendar to look forward to in 2013.

From the 19th hole

I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving.

Last week, I was out for an evening with friends and I had a couple of beers and several scotches followed by some rather nice red wine.

Feeling jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be over the limit. That’s when I did something that I’ve never done before — I took a cab home.

Sure enough on the way home there was a police roadblock, but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise because I had never driven a cab before, I don’t know where I got it and now that it’s in my garage I don’t know what to do with it … any ideas?
