A long time coming for KZN Inland

2012-01-16 00:00

IT has been a long time coming but well worth the wait.

KZN Inland beat KZN Coastal by nine wickets in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match at Kingsmead in Durban on Saturday for their first win of the 2011/2012 season in this competition, which will make a welcome improvement on the Maritzburg-based team’s position on the log.

Resuming their second innings on 57 for three and still trailing by 35 runs, KZN Coastal were unable to shrug off the spin duo of slow left-arm orthodox Kyle Nipper (2-36) and slow left-arm chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi (4-37) and stumbled to 175 all out.

Inland knocked off the 80-odd needed for victory in quick time with Nabeel Bhayla hitting 56.

Nipper took eight for 92 in the match, his best first-class figures to date. The nine-wicket victory is well deserved after the hard work and unwavering spirit instilled in the team by head coach Anton Roux, who is in the first year of his projected three-year contract with the squad.

Yesterday’s T20 bash saw the tables turn as KZN Coastal compiled 144 for eight, to which Inland replied with 104 all out for the Durban lads’ 40-run win.

After winning the toss Coastal got off to a flier. Cameron Delport (25 off 14 balls) and Loots Bosman reached 37 by the fifth over before Delport chanced his arm and was stumped by Chad Barron off seamer Brady Barends.

Bosman top-scored with 37 off 36 (two sixes and two fours) with Matt Hulett getting 27 off 27.

Only Glen Addicott got going in Inland’s reply, hitting 41 off 45 balls with two sixes and two fours, the next best being Nipper’s 16. A quartet of Coastal bowlers took a brace of wickets apiece.
