A mentor for Kurt Lentjies

JOHANNESBURG — New Bloemfontein Celtic signing Kurt Lentjies hopes he will finally get to work with Gordon Igesund in national colours.

Igesund, who was named Bafana Bafana coach last month, recruited Lentjies during managerial stints at Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United, respectively.

However, he was dismissed both times before the creative midfielder’s arrival at Chloorkop in 2008, and Pietermaritzburg a year later.

Lentjies explained to Football411.com how he narrowly missed out on spells with the former Moroka Swallows mentor.

“No, I never got to work with him. What happened was that he signed me for Sundowns, but then got fired. He then brought me on loan to Maritzburg and left again. He signed me on two occasions, but I never worked with him,” Lentjies told the site.

When asked if his Bafana prospects are better with Igesund in charge, Lentjies replied: “You never know. The ball is round. If I can play well in the early games of the season then maybe I can get a call up. Anything is possible in soccer.

“It’s a bonus, but I must just focus on doing well at my new club,” concluded the uncapped 27-year-old, who penned a two-year deal with Celtic from the Team of Choice in late June.
