A nightmare continues

2011-04-21 00:00

THE nightmare started with the disappearance of murdered Sandesh Poorun in February 2007 — the agony of not knowing what had happened to him, then identifying Sandesh’s charred body four days after he had disappeared.

The aftermath of the murder, the trial and complications arising from the murder are still the lot of the bereaved Poorun family.

His sister, Varsha, told the high court in Pietermaritzburg that her mother is a shell of her former self and other members of the family have been seriously affected.

Varsha and her father still feel anger and in their grief they still have to deal with unresolved issues.

She said Poorun’s clothes are still hanging in his room, more than two years fter he was choked unconscious by accused Amith Sewkarran and his wife Kalisha Rajcoomar, and then burnt with petrol and charcoal.

Before his murder Sandesh’s on-off relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Rajcoomar, also perturbed his parents and Varsha.

At one stage Sandesh lost his appetite and lost weight due to psychological presssure. She and Sandesh contacted each other during the marriage of Sewkarran and Rajcoomar.

Poorun had a diploma in electronic engineering, had worked for other diplomas and was a technician. She said he was shy, loved children, was meticulous about his appearance and not materialistic.
