A plane every 7 minutes: ‘best ever’ Durban Air Show expected

2011-06-22 00:00

THE Durban Air Show takes off next month, and this year’s will be the biggest in its history, according to organisers.

About 15 000 spectators are expected.

The 55th edition of the air show will be held at Virginia Airport in Durban North on July 16.

Said Ray de Vries, air show spokesperson, “The show is coming together very nicely and it is taking a huge step up with sponsorship from the City of Durban.

“It will be an action-packed event and we expect a capacity crowd. There are over 45 acts and a plane will take off or land every seven minutes.”

There will be parachutists, civilian jets, the Silver Falcons, passenger airliners and many acts on the ground involving aircraft.

“We have, amongst others, football supporters being freed from a hijacked bus by the crack South African Police Service task force backed up by the SAPS Air Wing, a Mirage speeding across the skies, aerobatic team formations and many other favourites that are guaranteed to keep the crowds enthralled,” said De Vries.

The show will open with a parade and a tribute to the city’s emergency, safety and security services assisted by other major emergency role players. Gates open at 7am for the public and the show starts at 9 am.

“We strongly recommend that the public purchase tickets before the show as the organisers are expecting a sell-out,” said De Vries.
