A rather dull, disappointing read

2012-02-15 00:00

PICTURES of You tells the story of Sam, a nine-year-old asthmatic boy who witnesses his mother April’s death in a terrible car accident.

The woman who was the driver of the car that killed April is tortured by what she has done.

The road to healing the emotional scars is arduous, and both together and separately, Sam and Isabelle need to silence their demons and forge a new life.

The book is endorsed on the front cover by Jodi Picoult, (“Magically written, heartbreakingly honest …”) so I thought it may be readable. Alas, it’s not.

While I see what Caroline Leavitt was trying to achieve with her words, I felt she does not quite get there. She relies too heavily on unlikely coincidences and improbabilities which, coupled with lashings of sentimentality, make it unbelievable and pretty lame. It’s not possible to suspend one’s disbelief as a reader or fully use one’s imagination when everything is mapped out so thoroughly and at times tediously for you.

I usually pass on review books to people I like who have similar reading tastes to me. This book would inflict irritation, and makes a pretty dull read, so it will be tossed into the charity pile. Maybe someone, somewhere will enjoy it. Picoult surprisingly did.
