A tale of acceptance and triumph

2011-05-18 00:00

TO overcome adversity and accept whatever life throws your way takes a person with a big heart, a person who is able to take time and do some introspection.

Tangled Toes, Pins & Needles tells a life-changing story about a young man whose life took a dramatic turn for the worse. Richard Pike, now a chartered accountant, was a promising sportsman, but he had his university studies at Wits university cut short by an accident on his way to a rowing competition — the Buffalo Raggata in East London.

The accident left Pike with a broken spine rendering him paralysed from the waist down.

The first challenge for Pike was to accept the fact that his was not an isolated case.

There were others in the hospital to which he was admitted who had gone through a similar experience and he had to learn that being paralysed didn’t mean that he had to disrespect the nursing staff and other patients.

He gave up trying to get better, an attitude which made the doctors efforts to help him recover more difficult, until he learnt to treat others the way he wished to be treated, and start to count his blessings.

Many don’t survive accidents like the one Pike was involved in.

Having accepted his condition and changing his behaviour towards others, he recovered and completed his degree.

If you have the time, read the book and make your own judgment on the author and the lessons that Pike learnt.
