A tale to make you fear global warming

2010-09-29 00:00

THE novel is set in the aftermath of global warming having reached its zenith.

It follows the trials and tribulations of ‘Makepeace’. Her parents moved to Siberia when climate change began having drastic effects on the earth, in an attempt to begin a new life free from the hassles of the degenerating world. Among other settlers they started a pre-industrial and agricultural town.

However, as the cities around the world fell into moral and environmental decay, people began to seek refuge in their utopian haven. Electricity was no longer generated and water and food was in short supply. As a result, people abandoned their morals and began to kill to survive. They became nomads.

The novel follows Makepeace’s hard and cruel journey to find something to hold on to in a world where everything has fallen apart. She constantly reminds herself of all that she has lost and yet her hope never dies. She has abandoned her feminine side and does not think twice about killing. Her family are dead, her town vacant and she has a mysterious past. The remote, isolated and cold setting of the story leaves the reader in fear. It is scary because it makes you question whether this piece of fiction is not so far from the truth.

Theroux’s writing is simple and uncomplicated. At times you expect something major to happen and for everything to fall into place and for the character to have a ‘normal’ life. I think it is this aspect of the book that makes it work because you are sucked into this dystopia and feel the utter despair that the characters are experiencing. I just hope that this book is not a self-fulfilling prophecy.
