A taste of originality

2008-01-11 00:00

VOTED tenth best album of 2006 by Rolling Stone Magazine, Tom Waits’ Orphans, a mixture of new and used tunes, is a fine example of his vast musical and lyrical abilities.

The box set contains three individually titled CDs with over fifty-six tracks and took three years to compile, compose and record.

Brawlers is the rowdiest of the three albums and focuses on the tales of outlaws, vagrants and misfits, the subject of a lot of Waits’s work. Some upbeat percussive blues and rockabilly mixed with authentic traditional spiritual and gospel ensure the versatility of this great-paced album.

Bawlers, in contrast is much gentler, telling stories of love, loss and compassion, successfully invoking nostalgic emotions through country-style waltzes, romantic piano ballads and old-style Latin rhythms.

The more eccentric and experimental work is housed on the Bastards. Wayward spoken stories about insects and cars, carnal percussion and interesting electronic looping provide some strange but exciting listening.

Drawing inspiration from America’s vast musical heritage and working with a multitude of talented musicians, Waits maintains the authenticity of the songs.

In Orphans, Waits has delivered top-class and highly innovative music that would appeal to those with a taste for originality.
