A teen rebelling in style

2010-09-29 00:00

DIE-HARD Twilight fan and fearless teen April-May February is on a collision course with fate.

Her parents have recently separated and she has moved in with her father, while her mother takes up with a man April-May (she prefers to call herself Bella after the Twilight heroine) hates. An intelligent girl, she has won a scholarship to a new school, Trinity College, and there she bumps heads with the dreaded Mrs Ho, whose mission it seems is to make her life miserable as she endeavours to get April-May to take her education seriously before she loses her scholarship.

Her skinflint father, Fluffy, works as a tow truck driver, and is falling apart after losing his job as a journalist and his wife to another man. It’s little wonder April-May is rebelling, and she does so with such style, I was downright envious that I did not rebel as well as she does.

But our anti-hero is not without friends. The irritating but adoring Melly has latched on to her, and April-May quickly learns to take full advantage of whatever Melly dishes up in her sycophantic undertaking to win April-May over. Then there is the alluring Sebastian, who April-May fantasises is Edward, the hunky Twilight vampire.

The book comes to a satisfying climax and April-May has a rather astonishing change of attitude towards certain things.

Aimed at teens, Bulbring’s books are not exclusively the realm of the pubescent. I preferred her earlier Pops and the Nearly Dead because there was so much more of it. Melly, Mrs Ho and Me has just started to grip you when it begins to end, which is a great pity.
