ACDP: ANC campaign using public funds

2011-05-02 00:00

NATIONAL chairperson of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Jo-Ann Downs, has criticised the the ANC for using government events and public money to campaign in the local government election.

Downs who is a member of parliament, a former member of the KZN Legislature and the former chairperson of the standing committee on public accounts, said that after receiving 30 invitations to government functions in just three weeks, there is reason to suspect that all these events are thinly veiled campaigning.

Downs on Friday sent out a list of invitations to government functions, saying this was an example of the government abusing funds to promote the ANC during elections.

She noted that most of the events were taking place in northern and southern Zululand where the ANC is on a determined drive to win municipalities run by the IFP.

She also noted that the Department of Social Development seemed to be the most active, going by the number of sod-turning and other events being held.

The IFP has also issued statements on the number of events being held around election time.

Both the ANC and the government denied that these events were electioneering, saying, that this was routine government service delivery work and that it cannot be stopped just because there was an election taking place.
