ANC: Cele fails to get nominated by own branch

2012-11-20 00:00

FORMER police commissioner Bheki Cele’s own branch in Lamontville failed to nominate him for the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) when it finally met on Sunday. Cele was also dropped by the ANC’s eThekwini region for an NEC post, amid speculation he was campaigning against President Jacob Zuma.

The meeting, which failed twice to convene after accusations of vote rigging, finally got off the ground on Sunday. Not all was smooth-sailing though.

The meeting, presided over by eThekwini chairperson Sibongiseni Dhlomo, was once more marred by a walkout. The meeting went ahead without them.

Cele’s spokesperson Vuyo Mkhize said the former commissioner accepted the outcome at both branch and regional level. “The ultimate view of the ANC members nationally with respect to his contribution to make to the movement and the country will emerge in Mangaung,” said Mkhize.

He added that Cele did not attend the branch meeting because he had a prior family engagement and his absence removed him from “the centre and being mischaracterised as a focus of tensions”.
