2012-08-07 00:00

FORMER ANC MP Nomatyala Hangana died on Friday, the ANC said in a statement.

Hangana, who was Deputy Minister for Provincial and Local Government, died at her home in the Western Cape after a short illness.

Moloto Mothapo, of the ANC office of the chief whip, said Hangana was among the first generation of public representatives the had ANC sent to parliament after the 1994 elections.

She was a former chairperson of the housing portfolio committee.

Hangana was a fearless and selfless activist who, like many women activists who fought in the struggle, sacrificed immensely to bring about freedom and equality, said Mothapo.

He said during her tenure as deputy minister, she played a key role in the government’s 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women and Children campaign as its national convener.

She will be buried in Cape Town on Saturday.

More details about the funeral will be available during the course of the week.
