ANC: Mum on new portfolio names

2013-07-11 00:00

CAPE TOWN — ANC members in Parliament yesterday played their cards close to their chests as to which MPs would be appointed to portfolios.

Parliament’s portfolio committee for justice and constitutional development is widely seen as an important committee where members often disagree on attempts to transform the judiciary as well as on important legislation like the bill on legal practitioners.

MPs from all political parties yesterday described the appointment of John Jeffery, the new deputy minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, as a big loss for the committee.

DA MP Dene Smuts said Jeffery will fare well. “Jeffery does not tolerate incompetence and corruption and with his experience he can not only identify problems, but also do something about them.”

Cope MP Luzelle Adams said she is looking forward to a “somewhat quieter committee that would be able to conclude matters quicker in Jeffery’s absence”.

Spokesperson for the ANC caucus Moloto Mothapo said the proc-ess to deploy new committee mem-bers will be finalised soon so as not to disrupt the parliamentary processes after the recess.

Jeffery last month made headlines when he made derogatory remarks about DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko.
