ANC denies ‘donation for tender’ allegations

2009-10-19 00:00

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed receiving a donation from businessman Gaston Savoi, but claims “it was made in good spirit and was not linked to any reward for a state tender”.

This response is to a Sunday Tribune story that alleges that former KZN Head of Treasury Sipho Shabalala attempted to solicit a donation on behalf of the ANC from a businessman in return for a government tender.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalalala said his party accepts donations and sponsorship from various people, especially those in business.

“… The ANC like any other political party depends and survives on donations and sponsorship to run its programmes,” said Zikalala.

He said the ANC “is always transparent with regard to the donations and sponsorships that we receive, and that all donations are done in a manner which is above board so as to not compromise the organisation”.

He expressed concern that an a matter which is under investigation has been leaked to the media, saying this resulted in facts being distorted.
