ANC kicks off Ugu ward election campaign

2010-12-08 00:00

THE regional secretary of the ANC on the lower South Coast, Mzwandile Mkhwanazi, disclosed at a meeting yesterday that the party has begun identifying candidates to contest the elections next year for wards in the Ugu District.

Mkhwanazi said that the process, which encourages communities to elect their own councillors, began last week and should be concluded by January 15.

“We are in the process of identifying these potential candidates, who will then be screened.”

Mkhwanazi said it is important for the ANC that the selection happens in as fair a way as possible. “You [the media] are all welcome to join us through this process and if you think we are bluffing you can tell us.”

The regional secretary acknowledged that there have been issues in the past involving councillors who have proved to be corrupt and falter in terms of service delivery.

“It is always risky, but we are optimistic that those selected will be honest leaders,” he said.

“We will try our best to get the cleanest councillors possible and to do this we will need them to be as close to the community as possible.”

Ward councillors are given five-year contracts when they are selected.
