ANC mulling request for Juju expulsion review

2012-05-22 00:00

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has confirmed that the ANC Youth League has written a letter to the party to ask for a review of the expulsion of its leader, Julius Malema.

But Mantashe said the letter had come too late to be discussed at the national executive committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend.

He told TheWitness after a briefing on its NEC meeting yesterday that he had received the league’s letter on May 15 and was considering it.

The letter followed two meetings between the league’s leaders, minus Malema and suspended secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

Mantashe refused to explain the review process, but it is understood that the officials should first discuss any request for a review and then refer it to the powerful national working committee (NWC), which could then write a report to submit to the NEC. The party’s officials and the NWC meet only on Mondays, which means they didn’t have time to discuss the league’s request before the NEC meeting.

Mantashe said there was no request to discuss the matter at the NEC meeting, but The Witness understands that Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile stood up to ask where the report about Malema’s disciplinary case was.

An NEC source with knowledge of the proceedings said that in big cases the national disciplinary committee and the appeal committee would write a joint report on the case, which would then be submitted to the NEC.

Mantashe denied a report in the Sunday Times that the party’s officials would reconsider Magaqa’s one-year suspension for failing to provide proof of his apology to Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba.
