ANC set to expel 38 KZN members

2011-09-16 00:00

ABOUT 38 KwaZulu-Natal ANC leaders who stood against their party’s candidates during the local government elections in May face imminent expulsion following a recommendation by the party’s provincial disciplinary committee.

The committee has ruled that the members who stood as independents be expelled.

In Msunduzi Municipality 18 members contested the elections as independent candidates. Only one independent candidate in Moses Mabhida region, Khulekani Magubane, won a ward, in Richmond.

KwaZulu-Natal ANC spokesperson Makhosi Khoza said the members should have raised their concerns in internal party structures.

“Our constitution prohibits any standing in an election against the ANC and the ANC’s decision or recommendation at this stage to actually suspend the independent is consistent with the provisions of our own constitution, which is the supreme law of the organisation,” said Khoza.

Sandile Ngcobo, who was an independent candidate in Dambuza ward 21, said he was not called before the party’s disciplinary committee and has received no correspondence about being expelled.
