ANC tactics to woo young voters

2011-05-09 00:00

CURIOUS locals who saw three Mini Cooper cars festooned in ANC colours in Port Shepstone last week may see a lot more of them in the run-up to the local government elections.

The three little cars, borrowed by the ANC from private owners to campaign during the elections, will pass through the town again on 15 May on their way to Gamalakhe and Nzimakwe.

ANC regional secretary-general Mzwandile Mkhwanazi said the Minis will lead a motorcade with the ANC candidates who are to be introduced to the public.

Last week popular African artists Big Nuz got to ride in the cars and wave to the people from the sunroof.

The move is part of the ruling party’s tactics to appeal to young voters without alienating the old.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala explained, “We thought about it carefully and decided this type of car has appeal to the youth — who we are trying to attract — and it is also a happy car that pulls the attention of older people.”

When the election is over, the branding will be removed and the cars will be returned to their owners.
