ANC ‘will respect Cope name ruling’

2008-12-08 00:00

THE African National Congress will abide by the Pretoria High Court decision about Congress of the People’s (Cope) disputed name even if it is not in its favour, a senior party official said yesterday. The high court will tomorrow hear arguments regarding the issue.

The ANC argues that it has the first claim on the name, saying that it has connections to the 1955 Congress of the People rally, which gave birth to the Freedom Charter.

Cope argues that the ruling party is exaggerating its connection to the rally.

Speaking in Ndwedwe near Verulam yesterday, ANC senior leader Zola Skweyiya said the issue of the name is emotional. “Although we feel strongly that our party has strong connections to the Congress of the People rally, we will abide by the court decision …” he said.

Skweyiya criticised people who insult and intimidate members of Cope, saying the new party has a right to exist and campaign freely like any other political party in South Africa.

“… the ANC will not tolerate people who intimidate other people,” he adeed.
