ANC youth leadership squabbles

2011-05-30 00:00

THE ANC Youth League (ANCYL) held its regional conference in Port Edward at the weekend, amid allegations that the Julius Malema faction is trying to cement his position and force out those not in his camp.

The outcome of the leadership vote was not available at time of going to press, but the squabbles that led to the disbandment of the local leadership last year continued to beset the conference.

Ahead of the meeting at the Estuary Hotel in Port Edward, there were allegations that delegates of local branches were not being allowed to register because they were allegedly not on an approved list.

Sources said the interim leadership, which is part of the Malema camp, were trying to ensure that delegates perceived as being anti-Malema could not register.

“The registration took place at our offices in Port Shepstone and you could see for yourself that there were lots of irregularities in the process also at branch levels,” alleged one source.

Lindo Mzimela, a senior member of the interim ANCYL regional leadership denied there was anything irregular in the registrations, but declined to comment further.

“This is an internal matter, but I can confirm that the conference goes on Saturday,” said Mzimela.
