ANCYL: ‘explain recruiting deaths’

2013-01-14 00:00

The KZN Department of Transport must account for its recruitment processes that resulted in the deaths of eight people, the ANC Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola said at the ANC’s 101st anniversary celebrations at King’s Park Stadium on Saturday.

Lamola called on the ANC to declare youth unemployment a national emergency and said they wanted answers on how young people lost their lives during the recruitment process. The incident took place at the Harry Gwala stadium shortly before New Year when eight recruits for traffic officer positions died and hundreds of others were treated by emergency personnel or were hospitalised. A report on the incident was submitted to Premier Zweli Mkhize by Transport MEC Willies Mchunu. Mkhize said there will be an inquiry and asked that the law be allowed to take its course.

Lamola said the youth must take education seriously and must participate in initiatives to learn skills themselves. He added that the league was not suffering from a Mangaung hangover and both respected and accepted the outcome of the conference. He called on youth to rally behind the current ANC leadership.
