ATM bombing:cops search for gang

2012-11-03 00:00

POLICE are searching for a group of men that allegedly bombed two ATMs at Merrivale Spar during the early hours of yesterday morning.

This follows a similar attack on the ATMs at Howick SuperSpar centre recently.

People in neighbouring homes were awakened by the big bang and subsequent AK47 gun fire as the gang removed money from the FNB and Absa ATMs. It is alleged that about 10 men who were in a white bakkie used explosives to blow up the ATMs.

Police also found four AK47 cartridges in the parking area.

The Spar shop was littered with debris from the blast. The doors of the ATMs lay inside the shop with the shop wall having cracked from the force of the explosion. Papers were scattered around.

When the FNB ATM safe was opened only R400 was in the machine and was taken by the police as evidence. The other ATM was cleaned out by the gang.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they are investigating. “No arrests have been made and we don’t know how much money was taken.”

The Witness reported that two ATMs were blown up at the Howick SuperSpar centre two weeks ago, also in the early hours of the morning.
