THEATRE REVIEW

The Abba Show

Izulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World

THE music of Abba is often dismissed as lightweight pop, but Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson actually crafted complex melodies which have challenged both the band’s own singers, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and those who’ve performed their hits over the years.

The cast of The Abba Show meet that challenge head on, and from start to finish offer fans a great tribute to the Swedish supergroup.

According to the programme notes, Abbasolutely Fabbaulous first performed the show in 1985 in Christchurch, New Zealand, for a six-week cabaret season. It proved so popular that the season was extended for six months. The show then went on tour and 24 years later is still travelling around the world.

It certainly was a hit with Durban audiences at the Izulu Theatre with patrons literally dancing in the aisles to numbers ranging from SOS and The Name of the Game to Knowing Me, Knowing You, Money, Money, Money, Dancing Queen and many more.

This show is great fun and perfect for a night out with your friends, so grab your platforms and flares, and head down to Sibaya this festive season.

• Showtime Australia’s The Abba Show is at the iZulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World, until January 10. Tickets are available at Computicket or the venue.
