Accident: 6 die as taxi overturns

KWAZULU-NATAL Transport MEC Bheki Cele urged road users to be more cautious on the roads after six people died in an accident in Wartburg yesterday.

Department spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha said preliminary reports revealed that a minibus taxi driver failed to stop at a stop sign on the R614 Montebelo turn-off and the vehicle overturned and hit a tree. The driver was one of the six people who died on the scene and eight others were transported to a nearby hospital in critical conditions.

Cele said there needs to be an improvement in the behaviour of drivers.

“Too many of our people have lost their lives on the roads due to accidents that could have been prevented. It is high time that our people became more responsible on the roads. We can curb the number of accidents on roads if everyone obeys the rules. I would also like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved,” Cele said. — WR.
