Accident: Man killed in tanker crash

2010-07-01 00:00

A MAN was killed and another seriously injured during a vehicle pile-up caused by a runaway tanker in Durban yesterday evening.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the deceased, whose personal details were unknown, was seated on the back of the bakkie.

The accident happened at the interchange of the N2 and M7 near Rossburgh.

“The tanker lost control and ran to the opposite lane before it hit the bakkie and another light vehicle. One person died and another was injured,” said Mngomezulu.

In a separate accident, a driver and his passenger jumped out of their vehicle, which belonged to a private road accident management company, when it caught fire after an explosion in the engine on the N3 near Camperdown yesterday evening.

The two people were not hurt, but the panel van, which belonged to Star of Life emergency clean-up company, was completely destroyed. The company’s director Mohamed Olla said the two were travelling from the south coast to Camperdown.
