Accident: four die, six injured in pile-up

2010-07-12 00:00

FOUR people died and six others were seriously injured after the cars they were travelling in were involved in a multiple collision at Ngogo near Newcastle on Saturday.

The N11 Majuba pass had to be closed for several hours. According to department of transport spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu, a horse and trailer truck was involved in a head-on collision with a bakkie, which was then involved in a rear end collision with another vehicle.

“The vehicles then caught alight, but the passengers were slightly burnt as the fire was immediately put out,” said Mngomezulu. She said it is believed the truck had brake failure, causing the incident.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said that a case of culpable homicide was opened.
