Accident: three injured when Putco bus bursts into flames on N11

2010-07-06 00:00

THREE people sustained injuries when a bus they were travelling in caught alight yesterday morning on the N11 near Mjuba.

The bus was carrying an estimated 62 passengers at the time.

According to Zinhle Mngomezulu, spokesperson for the Department of Transport, the bus belonging to the Putco Company was travelling from Babanango to Johannesburg when it caught alight.

She said while the bus was travelling on the N11, the driver heard a loud bang and pulled over to the side of the road. The bus caught alight while the passengers hurried to get off.

Three people sustained injuries in the scramble to safety.

While everyone managed to get out, most of the passengers lost all their belongings.

Mngomezulu said the passengers were stranded by the side of the road for about five hours, waiting for a replacement bus from the Putco depot in Johannesburg.

Mngomezulu said it is still not clear what caused the fire and there has been no official investigation into the accident as no one was killed.
