Accidents: five die in collision with truck

2010-01-09 00:00

FIVE people died when their VW Golf collided head-on with a bulk-carrier on the N11 near Charlestown, just outside Newcastle, yesterday morning.

All the dead were occupants of the Golf and among them were two paramedics from Charlestown. The truck was from Volksrust headed for Durban, while the Golf was from Newcastle.

Provincial traffic information officer Zintle Mngomezulu said it took more than an hour to extricate the bodies as the vehicle was lodged underneath the truck.

It is alleged that the driver of the Golf failed to negotiate a band and veered into the oncoming lane.

An accident in Pietermaritzburg left eight people injured, one man critically so, when a minibus taxi slammed head-on into an articulated truck, at the intersection of Allandale and Old Greytown roads yesterday afternoon. The critically injured man, a front seat passenger in the taxi, suffered the amputation of his left foot among other injuries.

It is believed that the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the path of the truck.
