Accidents: six struck by minibuses

2010-01-19 00:00

AT least six people — five of them schoolchildren — were injured when they were struck by minibuses yesterday.

Along Edendale Road in KwaPata, a 13-year-old schoolgirl was knocked down by a taxi while on her way to school.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the girl suffered possible neck and back injuries and is in a serious condition in hospital.

“It is unclear whether the taxi driver was speeding or whether the young girl stepped into the road,” he said.

A woman and four school-children were seriously injured when they were struck by a minibus taxi on the Adams Mission road south of Durban yesterday morning.

The children were apparently waiting on the kerb for a lift when the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and mounted the pavement. All sustained serious injuries.

In Pietermaritzburg, two people were seriously injured yesterday morning when a car they were travelling in collided with a bakkie in Burger Street. The driver and passenger in the car were trapped in the wreckage. ER24 paramedics treated them both for serious neck and back injuries.
