Acclaimed local photographer releases magnum opus

2014-12-10 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG’S very own internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer yesterday released what he calls his “ultimate book”.

Showcasing his awe-inspiring work with Africa’s most beautiful creatures, Heinrich van den Berg’s Reflection is a mammoth 3,3 kg book, with pictures of nature at its finest.

It was released yesterday in Westville.

Born in Vryheid, Van den Berg grew up in Pietermaritzburg and attended Voortrekker High School. He said his parents used to go to national parks all over KZN and his passion for photography started there.

“Wildlife photography started as a hobby in school and I’ve been a photographer for 17 years now. I don’t have a favourite photograph because I always believe there’s a better one to be taken.”

His photos have been showcased throughout the world and his new book tries to incorporate the theme of change as the colours traverse from black-and-white to all the colours of the rainbow in a vibrant display of “artistic poetry”.

His most incredible photo was taken at Tala Game reserve, where he always went with his parents, and associated egrets with rhinos. One avid supporter recently commented: “In this amazing shoot is a rhino, with egrets flying around its head, in a circle to form a halo around its head, very symbolic of the plight of the rhino, which are being poached mercilessly.”

Van den Berg recalled some of the most treasured memories of his career, which range from photographing turtles at night to being attacked by an angry hippopotamus on the Zambezi River.

“It’s the best job I can think of because you get to experience so much of the wildlife and the world around you.”

Reflection has been selected for the 2014 Exclusive Books Christmas promotion.
