Accused hijackers in court

2013-06-25 00:00

TWO men from Hammarsdale, who are suspected of being members of an alleged crime syndicate operating in Scottsville, made a brief appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The third alleged accomplice is still in hospital.

Ayanda Shezi (20) and Makhosonke Buthelezi (33) were arrested after a shoot-out with police on Friday in Golf Road. One of their victims had identified them walking down the road and called the police.

An accomplice, Thulani Mngadi (49), was arrested at the weekend.

Shezi and Mngadi appeared for two cases of robbery and two cases of attempted murder of police members.

Buthelezi, also from Hammarsdale, did not appear, as he is in hospital as a result of a dog bite he sustained during his arrest. According to the charge sheet, he is facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm, described as a 9 mm silver and black Norinco.

It is alleged that they pointed a firearm at Johanna Marie Woodroff in May 31, when they were hijacking her in Dulwich Road in Scottsville. They allegedly took her VW Polo, cellphones, R500 and a handbag.

On June 18, it is alleged that they hijacked Thabani Mkhize in Escombe Road.

They are also charged with two counts of attempted murder of two police officers, Tanki Machili and Christian Xolani Shabangu, in crossfire in Golf Road on Friday last week, when they were confronted by police.

The state is opposing bail for the accused. Shezi and Mngadi made application for legal aid representation. Mngadi told the court that he had a broken rib and would like to get medical attention.

They will be back in court on July 1 as investigations continue.
