Accused kidnapper appears in court

ANOTHER Bangladeshi man has appeared court in connection with the kidnapping of Jashid Hossen (named in earlier stories as Jashin Uddin) from Northdale, who was later found in Johannesburg.

Jahid Jaman (27) from Mpumalanga made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday for robbery and the kidnapping of Hossen.

The charge sheet alleges that the victim was threatened with a firearm and his hands were tied during the robbery at KD’s supermarket in Old Greytown Road where the alleged kidnapping took place.

An amount of R20 000 in cash, four cellphones, R8 000 worth of cellphone airtime and R12 000 worth of cigarettes as well as a camera and computer were allegedly taken. Hossen was then allegedly dragged to a car, shoved into the boot and driven to Johannesburg.

Charges against Bangladesh national Ibrahim Miah — who was initially arrested and charged — were withdrawn by the court last week. Hossen was found after two weeks.

Jaman will be back in court on July 16.
