Achiever: maths success despite adversity

2010-01-08 00:00

SIPHOSETHU Khuzwayo, the pupil who scooped the award for Top Mathematics Learner against Adversity, promised himself that he would not let his poor background stand in his way of having a good future.

The softly-spoken teenager from Mashiyamahle High School in Ndwedwe, an impoverished village north of Durban, said life has dealt him many blows, but he refused to be negative.

Instead, he worked hard at school and proved that anything is possible.

Siphosethu lost his twin brother five years ago. He and his mother live in a one-bedroom house in Ndwedwe and sometimes did not have a meal to eat.

“I promised myself that I would do well. I want to make a better life for myself and my mother. She is very good to me, so I need to take care of her,” he said.

“School is a happy place for me. I like learning and applying my mind to problems. My teachers have been very good to me,” he added.

Siphosethu said he was very excited about his award and hoped to be a role model to other pupils at his school.

His proud principal, Mthembeni Ntanzi, said Siphosethu has always been a hard worker and excelled in all his subjects.

“My heart swells with pride because I know how tough his life has been. He deserves this award and I know that he is going to have a bright future,” he said.

Siphosethu has been offered two bursaries and intends studying towards an engineering degree.
