Action comedy, politics and teen drama in the mix

ROBERT Luketic (21, The Ugly Truth) directs Killers, an action comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, which opens at CineCentre in Pietermaritzburg today.

The film tells the story of Spencer Aimes (Kutcher), an undercover, government-hired super-assassin accustomed to a life of exotic European locales, flashy sports cars and even flashier women. But when he meets Jen Kornfeldt (Heigl), a fun-loving computer techie recovering from a bad break-up, he finds true love and happily trades international intrigue for domestic bliss.

Three years later and the morning after Spencer’s 30th birthday, the couple learn he’s the target of a multi-million dollar hit. Even worse, the hired killers have been stalking them for years, and could be anyone: friends, neighbours, the grocery store clerk, even that crabby old guy shuffling across the street.

As their suburban paradise turns into a game of dodge-the-bullet, they must find out who wants Spencer dead and why, all the while trying to save their marriage, manage his pain-in-the-ass in-laws, keep up neighbourly appearances … and just plain survive.

Also new on Pietermaritzburg screens this weekend, is Raajneeti, the new Indian film, which takes a close look at that country’s politics and how a few people control the destiny of millions.

The cast includes Naseeruddin Shah as Bhaskar Sanyal, a firebrand leftist leader, as feared for his single-handed ability to challenge the most powerful of leaders as he was respected for his political integrity; Ajay Devgan as Sooraj Kumar, who rose from the country’s lower classes; Arjun Rampal as Prithvi Pratap, the heir to a powerful political legacy and a man impatient to seize the top position; and Ranbir Kapoor as Samar Pratap, an apolitical conscientious objector who gets sucked into the battleravaged arena of family rivalry.

The third new film in the city is the teenage drama To Save A Life, which tells the story of Jake Taylor and Roger Dawson, who were best friends when they were children. When they get to high school, however, Jake becomes a star athlete who has it all — a college scholarship and the perfect girl — while Roger has nothing: no friends, no girls and no hope.

Feeling angry that he doesn’t fit in, Roger walks onto campus with a gun in his pocket and makes a tragic decision. Jake’s last-ditch effort can’t stop Roger, and the sudden tragedy compels him to question everything.

In his quest for answers, he finds himself looking for the next Roger and reaching out to the geeks, losers and loners. But he quickly finds that crossing class castes threatens everything he’s built his world on.
