Adongo stands in for forwards trio

THREE Sharks regulars, flanks Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel and lock Steven Sykes, will miss the two Tri-Series pre-season friendlies in Cape Town over the next week.

Sharks coach John Plumtree has named a 27-man squad for the Cape Town jaunt and the matches against the Lions on Tuesday and the Stormers next Saturday.

Deysel, recovering from surgery, is still undergoing rehabilitation while Daniel and Sykes are nursing minor niggles.

Plumtree has included the young Daniel Adongo, who has played on the wing but is included as a loose forward, while Bok Sevens player Mark Richards and lock Anton Bresler also join the squad.

“We are not going to risk anyone who is not completely fit,” Plumtree said in releasing the names.

Daniel and Sykes are expected to be fully fit for the Super Rugby opener against the Cheetahs at King’s Park on February 19.

There are 15 Springboks in the 27-man squad, while new signings Meyer Bosman, Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Conrad Hoffman are all included.

Plumtree said he will mix and match his players in the two games.

“These friendlies are about contact and trying out new combinations in a match situation,” said Plumtree, “and this is the ideal opportunity to give everyone in the group a decent run in competitive conditions.”
