African Access grows even more

2008-04-17 00:00

The "growth march" of top 200 company African Access Holdings lifted yet another notch recently with news that the company has acquired a 26% stake in SA Earthworks, a privately owned construction and mining company.

Shaun Battleman, CEO of African Access, a black-owned development and empowerment company, told The Witness that the move fits with the group’s plan to target high-growth sectors.

SA Earthworks is involved in bulk earthworks, roads, demolitions, quarrying, mining and the generation of clean energy from household waste.

"There are not many black-[owned] companies playing in the Earthworks field. This is a great deal for us. SA Earthworks has experienced 400% growth over the past few years, [so] this has come at the right time. The deal started in November 2007 and came to fruition over the past few months. It was a quick match," he said.

Battleman noted that construction is high-performing not only in South Africa, but also in the Middle East, where construction plans extend to 2020.

He also noted that KZN offers a number of opportunities in this sector. "SA Earthworks has R250 million worth of plants, both in respect of excavators and [other] equipment."

Battleman views mining and road-works as two areas of high growth potential that are moving forwards.
