Aids testing centre launched

2007-11-26 00:00

Situated at the Bhakabha Community Hall, the initiative by New Start, which is a brand of the Society for Family Health in partnership with Targeted Aids Interventions (TAI), the centre aims to get more people tested so that they will know their HIV status.

Senior programme manager Miriam Mhazo said they aim to ensure clients are given an “inexpensive and accessible way to learn their status”.

She said at no point during the counselling and testing session are patients asked their names.

“Whether they are positive or negative, counsellors will help them plan for a longer, healthier life,” Mhazo said.

Currently, the New Start network has six sites in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Musina, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town.

They are funded by the South African government through the National Health Department and the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention through the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief.
