Ajax fight hard for win at last

2014-11-27 00:00

AJAX Cape Town earned their first win in three PSL matches by edging out Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 at the Cape Town Stadium last night.

In a tight game, the only goal of the game came through Urban Warriors midfielder Granwald Scott five minutes before the halftime break.

Ajax made the stronger start to the game, although it was Celtic who posed the first goal threat when Keegan Ritchie sent a rasping free kick just over the bar with two minutes gone.

Ajax’s first opportunity came seven minutes into the game when Thabiso Nkoana burst through on goal, but Phunya Sele Sele keeper Patrick Tignyemb made an excellent reflex save.

But for the most part of the opening exchanges, both sides looked too tentative when approaching the final third of the field.

After a couple of half chances for Nathan Paulse and Ritchie, the Urban Warriors were close to taking the lead 30 minutes into the half when Milton Ncube surged into the box before firing a powerful drive that flew into the side netting.

When the goal did finally arrive, on the 39-minutes mark, it came out of nothing as Granwald Scott struck with a fantastic first time effort from 25-yards out that whistled past Tignyemb and into the top corner.

The second half, however, saw the game reverting back to a rather dour tactical battle with nether side able to make any inroads in attack.

With 25 minutes to go the Free State side had a great chance to level matters when substitute Gregory Maasdorp found himself bearing down on Ajax keeper Anssi Jaakkola, but the giant from Finland was equal to the task as he made a brilliant save.

There were chances too for the home side to add to the scoreboard, but Cecil Lolo was denied on the line with 20 minutes to go, while Tashreeq Morris missed an excellent scoring opportunity when he placed a curling shot over the bar eight minutes from time.

The Free State side piled on the pressure in the closing minutes and nearly stole an equaliser in the final minutes of regulation time, but Jaakkola was again on top of his game as he made an outstanding stop against Lerato Lamola.
