Ajax just make top four ahead of Downs

2010-08-21 00:00

WITH little to choose between Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns at the Athlone Stadium last night, the home side advanced to the MTN8 last four via a penalty shoot-out victory.

Ajax won 4-3 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 after extra time. There was no score during the opening 90 minutes.

The first half belonged mainly to Sundowns as they took the game to the hosts for the most part of the first 45 minutes.

The Brazilians did not, however, have an awful lot to show for their efforts. The only times they came close to scoring was in the 31st minute when a goal-mouth scramble was narrowly averted by the Ajax defence and then just before the break when Buhlebuyeza Mkhwanazi’s nearly caught Ajax keeper Hans Vonk off guard.

The Cape side had even less to show, new signing Terror Fanteni often looking isolated in attack.

Their best chance came early on when Clayton Daniels flashed a header just wide, while Sameehg Doutie had a near-post shot saved by Calvin Marlin and George Maluleka fired an effort over the bar.

Following the restart, the Cape Town side showed signs that they could find a way onto the score-sheet with some more purpose in their attack.

But not much came of their early forays as Doutie let his team-mates down with some poor crosses and the likes of Terror Fanteni and Thulani Serero failed to link up.

The game went to extra time at 0-0.

Fanteni broke the deadlock after 101 minutes, bundling the ball home from close range after a rasping low cross from Doutie.

But the lead was short-lived as Mphela netted from close range just two minutes later.

In the final minute Calvin Marlin denied Fanteni with a fantastic save and Khame Billiat wasted a golden chance when he shot the rebound over the bar.

In the penalty shoot-out Vonk saved from Khenyeza, and then Marlin denied both Billiat and Lewis.

Mphela stepped up to win the game for Downs, but sent the ball into the stands. George Maluleka slotted home for Ajax.

Lebohang Mokoena needed to convert his spot kick, but he tamely chipped the ball straight into Vonk’s arms.
