Albert’s love children ‘a challenge’ — Charlene

2011-07-05 00:00

PRINCESS Charlene apparently tried to flee home to South Africa three times before her weekend marriage to Prince Albert of Monaco.

This after the prince was reportedly forced to submit to a paternity test to allay rumours of yet another illegitimate child.

French cyberspace was atwitter on Sunday after reports that palace officials had confiscated Charlene’s passport after the third attempt and convinced her to go ahead with the wedding, the British Daily Telegraph reported. Charlene’s tears after the ceremony fuelled the rumours.

Charlene’s first bid to escape apparently came when she was in Paris for a fitting for her Armani wedding dress and sought “sanctuary” at the South African embassy, the Telegraph reported. The second attempt came during the Monaco Grand Prix, and finally last week her passport was taken away as she tried to go to Nice airport to flee, reports said.

“Several sources confirmed that the bride and bridegroom reached an agreement,” French Sunday paper Le Journal du Dimanche reported.

On the Friday, the day of her civil marriage ceremony, Charlene told fashion magazine Vogue she regards the crisis over a possible third illegitimate child as a challenge.

“I’ve made sure I’m getting enough rest and am focused on my own space and have cut out everything else,” she said.

She said she was using the same visualisation techniques she used as a swimmer to calm herself. “It’s a pity the rumours came at such a bad time, but I think the time was specially chosen to sabotage a happy event. They are categorically lies. I won’t sink so low as to respond,” she said. “Photos of Albert and me will speak louder than nasty gossip.”

After first denying the stories of another possible child as nonsense, palace officials were forced to admit later that the prince had submitted to a paternity test, the Telegraph reported.

The latest rumours of a third and possibly fourth illegitimate child focus on the 18-month-old son of an Italian woman who is ready to “tell all”, the French magazine Public reported.

Other reports have referred to a pregnant former lover who alleges she is carrying Albert’s child.

The prince already has a six-year-old son, Alexandre, with Togolese air hostess Nicole Coste, and a 19-year-old daughter, Jazmin, with American estate agent Tamara Rotola.

Charlene and Albert have known each other for 10 years and have been a couple for five.
