Alert officer prevents rape

2011-10-12 00:00

A POLICEMAN on an evening patrol on Sunday became worried when he heard a woman’s frantic screams while driving in the Marburg area.

Warrant Officer Chris Poovan, who is stationed at Port Shepstone police station, quickly made a U-turn in order to see who was in danger.

“He proceeded in the direction where the screams were coming from,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Poovan was stunned to see a man lying on top of a woman on the pavement.

The man was assaulting the woman and tearing off her clothes.

Poovan knew he had to act fast, said Wiid.

As he leapt out of his vehicle the perpetrator became aware of the the officer’s presence and tried to flee.

Poovan chased the man down and arrested him.

“Upon interviewing the shocked, 32-year-old woman, the policeman learnt that the man had tried to rob and rape her.”

She had lacerations and bruises on her face and body, said Wiid.

Her clothes and underwear were ripped.

A 24-year-old man was charged with attempted rape and robbery and appeared in court yesterday.

No further details were available at the time of going to press.
