Alert over ATM fraud in CBD

2012-09-10 00:00

POLICE have warned Pietermaritzburg residents against accepting help from strangers at ATMs, following a string of ATM robberies in the CBD.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane warned users of ATMs to cancel their transactions when approached by strangers while at the automated teller machines.

“Cancel your transaction, remove your card and immediately report the matter to the bank,” said Zwane.

Police arrested two men in their thirties for ATM theft with the help of Safe City CCTV control room last week.

Police received a report from the control room about four men committing a theft at the Capitec Bank ATM in Church Street.

“Preliminary investigations have established that the victim, a 42-year-old woman, was waiting in line at the ATM for an unknown man to complete his withdrawal. As he left the ATM, it is alleged that victim proceeded to the ATM and a short while later the same man returned and told her that he had forgottten his slip.”

The woman said: “Another man then approached and stopped me from inserting my bank card into the machine, saying I was inserting it the wrong way. He took my card and insisted that I punch in my pin number.”

She did not punch in the pin but elected to go inside the bank to ask for help.

The arrested men are due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly.
