Alexandra police station: sergeant found dead

2012-08-31 00:00

A POLICE sergeant was found dead in his barrack room at Alexandra Road police station yesterday.

The Witness understands that the 46-year-old sergeant’s birthday was on Wednesday. He was supposed to work a night shift, but did not arrive at work, said close friends who were on the scene.

“I still cannot believe that my friend is dead. I sent him messages wishing him well on his birthday but he never responded to any of my messages,” said a friend who did not want his name published.

“I got confused and wondered what could have been the reason for him not to respond,”

The name of the officer, from Mafakatini in the Vulindlela area, is known toThe Witness , but has been withheld until his family and relatives are informed.

The body was discovered after a colleague went to the officer’s room to look for him. He found the door locked and dialled his friend’s number only to hear the phone ringing inside.

He told his senior officers, who ordered the door broken down.

The sergeant was found prone with a gunshot wound in his forehead.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident.

“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the time of death,” he said.

He said no foul play was suspected.
