Alfie Cox allowed to continue Dakar Rally

2009-01-12 00:00

Pietermaritzburg’s Dakar legend, Alfie Cox, was thrown a life-line on Saturday evening after being given permission to continue competing in the 2009 Argentina Chile Dakar Rally.

The South African and his German co-driver, Jurgen Schröder were previously excluded from completing the race after they were unable to start the stage to Valparaiso on time on Friday due to mechanical problems.

“I am so glad that we were given permission to continue. The disappointment was massive when we were excluded and the days negotiating with the officials were extremely stressful. In the end we are continuing, even though it is only for the honour of potentially earning a finisher’s badge,” said Cox.

He added that his excitement at being allowed to attempt to finish the gruelling race is fuelled by the fact that the Atacama will be the fourth world famous desert that he will conquer. “I have already raced in the Sahara, Namib, Mexico, and now the Atacama, the driest of them all.”

In the eighth stage on Sunday, Cox and Schröder started in 97th position after being issued with massive time penalties for their previous late start, but fought back to finish the stage in 25th position.
