Alison Kearney exhibits in durban

2008-04-29 00:00

Running in the Main, Mezzanine and Electric galleries at the KZNSA Gallery until May 9 is Put Something In to Get Something Out and other recent work by Alison Kearney.

This solo exhibition consists of selected artworks made between 2006 and 2008. Parts of the exhibition have been variously shown in Melbourne, Basel and Johannesburg. It is, however, the first time any of these works will be exhibited in Durban.

Put Something In to Get Something Out is an interactive artwork that invites direct audience participation. The installation consists of a series of wooden boxes, each containing objects (found or made by the artist), arranged or selected according to a theme. Participants are invited to take an object out of the box if they replace this object with something of their own. To complete the exchange process, participants are asked to write about the items they swapped, and the reasons for their decisions.

Opening at the same time in the Nivea Gallery is an exhibition of monoprints by Nelson Makamo, Walking into a Light. Makamo writes that “currently my work reflects everyday life situations and observations of people that work in and around Johannesburg”.
